Personal experience

Dr. Smith entered private practice in San Diego in 1989 and has a broad range of interests across all aspects of retinal diseases and surgery, including management of complex retinal detachments, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, as well as clinical research.

Dr. Smith has been named one of The Top Doctors in San Diego for the past 8 consecutive years, an honor bestowed upon fewer than 40 physicians across all medical specialties.

Dr. Smith is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, and the San Diego County Medical Society.

He is a past President of the San Diego Eye Bank as well as having served as the Chief of the Department of Ophthalmology at Scripps Mercy Hospital for a number of years.

Dr. Smith is on staff at Scripps Mercy Hospital, Sharp Memorial Hospital, and Tri-City Hospital.

Dr. Smith sees patients at both our Kearny Mesa and Oceanside offices.

The American College of Surgeons provides the Fellow, American College of Surgeons (FACS) designation to medical doctors who undergo a rigorous process that verifies their knowledge and dedication to the practice of surgery and medicine. Throughout this process, medical doctors are required to to be evaluated by the American College of Surgeons for several factors, including professional qualifications, education and training, ethical conduct, and overall surgical knowledge and competence. While FACS is the highest level of honor, there are other designations that are available for medical students and new surgeons.
